Portable Storage … A Hassle Free Transportation Option

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Portable Storage is fast becoming the preferred method of household transportation across the United States. Lacunae in the traditional transportation business led to the evolution of the Portable storage system. The traditional transportation business offered no flexibility in terms of loading and unloading of items. If the customer had a housing problem at the new destination, the traditional trucking system had no answer and the customer had to find a friends house to store his belongings or book into expensive warehouses. The new portable storage system addresses these problems quite effectively.

Moving services and storing services are the two components of Portable Storage system. In the moving services, portable storage units are delivered at the customer’s residence. The contract clauses in the portable storage system allow the customer flexibility of time to load the containers. Unlike the traditional Truck based system, portable storage units do not require ramps as they are ergonomically designed. The variety of containers is far more than the variety afforded by traditional trucks. For example, Portable Storage companies offer containers of differing sizes such as 5X5 feet sized container for loading belongings from a studio flat, 5X10 feet sized container for a one bedroom apartment, 10X15 feet for two/three bedroom apartment, 10X20 feet for a three/four bedroom apartment and a 10X30 feet for a larger house. Thus the customer has the flexibility to choose from a range of sizes according to his requirements.

Even during the move, the Portable Storage units loaded on trucks are kept under constant surveillance by incorporating the latest in GPS tracking technology, so the customer know the position of his luggage at all times. The storage services offer to keep the customer’s belongings in secure company warehouses till such time the customer is ready to accept the delivery of the items. The customer thus gets time to make arrangements for a house or an alternate storing place at the new destination.

Of course these services come at a price but this is competitive when taking into consideration the troubles one would have had to undergo in case such a storage option was not available at the new destination. Other services offered by portable storage companies include storage of a customer’s car or boat. Home storage of wines in environment controlled conditions is yet another service offered by portable storage companies. The portable Storage industry has grown and diversified into many fields and is truly a revolution in the transportation industry.

Storage Today

I recently bought a house and packed gradually to move. I started with the things that I definitely will not need between now and the time that I officially moved. For instance, I started taking trinkets off of shelves (which, by the way, all left a large ring of dust…that way, I would know where to put them back if I ever need to!), and of course it took me forever. Boy oh boy, have I accumulated a lot of junk over the years. Anyway, I kept thinking to myself that I should just hire a portable storage company to come and pack up all of my stuff and take it away.

I had now moved on to packing winter clothes, all of my books, DVDs, etc. There was no end in sight. I was still thinking about that portable storage company, but was able to hold back; I convinced myself that it would cost too much and that I should stop being such a whiner. I constantly was thinking about how easy a portable storage company would be, but I held back. A couple of days later, my bank statement came in the mail. I had used my debit card to purchase over two hundred dollars worth of moving supplies (those plastic tubs are expensive!). I guess the moral of my tale of woe is to just go with the portable storage company. It would have cost a little bit more money, but in the end, it would have been totally worth it.

Using Storage and Moving Containers

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Storage and moving containers are a great way to not only move house, but store your possessions. Although they are often advertised primarily as moving containers, storage and moving containers are, as the name suggests, perfect for storing possessions without the bother of going to and from the storage unit yourself.

How can I use moving containers as storage?

You choose a storage container company and order the size of container you will need. The company’s truck will drop off the container at your house. When you have filled it, arrange for pickup with a phone call to the company. The company keeps the filled container at their warehouse until you are ready for them to redeliver it. Most customers want their storage and moving containers delivered to a new address, but the company will deliver to any address you specify, and will not think anything of it if you request that the container be delivered to the same address it was initially delivered to.

What types of belongings are storage and moving containers optimal for storing?

Possessions you do not plan to need for a while and will not need to retrieve on short notice are best for storage containers. You will probably be able to visit the company’s warehouse to access your storage container, but they will likely need two to three days’ notice so they can fetch the container from its position in a stack of other containers.

Can I fill a storage and moving container in the same way that I would fill a storage cube in a warehouse?

Unlike storage units, storage containers are picked up repeatedly, shifted, and even slightly tipped over the course of their use. Therefore, you will need to pack a storage container just like you would pack a moving container. Pack from the bottom up, not from the back forward, and make sure there is no space between boxes or any room for items to shift and break inside boxes. If you do not pack the entire container solid, rope down your belongings to prevent them from rolling about if the container is tipped slightly.

Storage and moving containers allow you to skip the hassle of wasting a day renting a van, filling it, driving it to the storage facility, unloading it, and returning the van. If you need to save time as well as make extra space in your house, consider ordering a storage container for yourself.
